trace, texture & transparency ONLINE: a course in glasspainting for artists

Upcoming course dates are listed on our 2025 schedule

Learn how to mix, thin and apply lead-free glasspaints with propylene glycol in this course of eight Zoom classes. Propylene glycol creates a slow-drying glasspainting mixture that can be moved across the surface of the glass while wet to reveal the transparent sparkle of unpainted glass even while shading. My two-part mixing process makes it easy to control the paint's consistency and drying speed, to paint solid black tracelines, and create textures like stone, wood, hair, and fabric.

Each 90 minute class in this course includes live instruction, hands-on exercises, video demonstrations, and Q&A. You will be painting glass in your own studio, and need a computer connected to wifi, a lightbox to work on, glass to paint, and access to a kiln.

A Glasspainting Kit of tools, materials, technical notes, drawings to trace over, and a class checklist will be shipped to you via USPS mail before the course begins. A class checklist provides instructions for setting up a comfortable workspace in your studio and sharing your work. Technical support is available.

At the end of the course you will know how to achieve, test for, and maintain optimum paint consistency. You will be able to create a range of textural effects and tracing techniques that suit your own style of drawing and painting, and have notes, tools, and glass painted during the workshop as inspiration for future projects.

Maximum 6 students per course.

eligibility

Artists from a variety of backgrounds have found these workshops useful and enjoyable. Experienced stained glass painters have expanded their technical skills, fluency and versatility. Artists of many disciplines, from illustrators to tattoo artists, have transferred their drawing skills to stained glass. Past students include glassblowers, fusers, and ceramicists.

Images are provided for tracing over, and the class is open to any and all drawing skill levels. The Coombs method of glasspainting works on any smooth shiny two-dimensional or three-dimensional surface that may be fired, including glazed ceramics and blown glass.
